Dickey Street in Amherst, NS is home to five large apartment buildings and townhouses that abut historic Dickey Brook. Built in the late 1960s through the early 1970s, by the 2010s these buildings had fallen into disrepair and became the target of thieves and vandals. Two major fires rendered the largest building, 15 Dickey, uninhabitable.
Rural Roots worked closely with a new owner, SRHI, to redevelop these buildings. This work included extensive structural remediation of the wood frame that had burnt through and partially collapsed. Our work included plans for shoring, demolition and reconstruction of the damaged areas and the installation of a new pitched roof. Suite redesigns were also developed for the basement and as well as new mechanical and electrical systems.
