The Taylor family operate a truly vertically-integrated mixed farming operation in West Hants County, NS. Meat is grown and slaughtered in a provincially inspected abattoir on their site and sold in a family-owned retail shop in Halifax. In an effort to further add value to their products they decided to expand the abattoir to be able to make ready-to-eat (RTE) food products, such as cured sausage or jerky.
Rural Roots worked closely with food safety consultants to develop detailed plans for the building that met stringent finish requirements and product/process flows. In addition to this, a new fresh water treatment and storage system was developed for the plant to overcome the difficult groundwater conditions.
